Management summary Polar Studio
Develop web-based business-applications with Polar Studio
In many organisations, the Intranet is only used to distribute static information, like
telephone-directories of information about the companies' products and services.
However, the intranet is also the ideal medium for business-applications. The Polar Studio
development-toolkit brings these web-based business-applications within reach. Though possible,
Polar Studio is not ment for building content management systems. It's all about web based
business applications.
Blue Polar Web-applications
|
During the development of web-applications, the developer normally tackles many technical
issues. When using Polar Studio, all these technical issues are already covered and tested. This way,
the developer can focus 100% on the desired functionality. Also, a developer with only limited
technical skills can build advanced web-applications. Code completion is just one of many time savers built in Polar Studio.

A ‘custom application' for each audience
Virtually any information-system has multiple user-groups, each with its own permissions and
features, like admins, managers and customers. Polar Studio is fully equiped to deal with these
issues and to customize the application for each user-group by a few clicks. The web-application
will automatically regard all permissions and group-specific settings and will display a customized
application for each user-group.
If your business-application contains sensitive data, you can implement security-tokens (either
hardware or software) with just a single click.
Extremely fast development results in lower cost
The advanced and rich standard functionality of Polar Studio and its advanced add-ons, reduce
the development-process to less then 20% of what you're used to. Systems that are normally
developed in months are now developed in weeks. Polar Studio offers so much flexibility, you can
now develop the applications using Rapid Prototyping, with more satisfied users as a result.
Examples
| A human-resources application |
|
The employees of the HR-department manage the system. The financial department
will grant the actual payments. The employees can view and edit (some) of their personal
data, like their address. They can also use the system to search telephone-numbers of their
colleagues.
|
| A system for the ‘Education-department’ |
|
An employee enters a request for a training in the intranet-application. 'Education' receives
this request and sends requests for information to some selected training-institutes using the
application. The training-institutes review these requests and respond directly using the
web-application. 'Education' filters the responses and sends the most applicable offers to
the employee.
|
| A central sales-system |
|
The account-managers use the application to register all offers they sent to their clients.
They can only see and edit their own offers. At the moment the client accepts or rejects
the offer, the account-manager registers the response. The account-managers can also
register other agreements. In case of illnes, the manager grants an other account-manager
to handle the work of the ill account-manager. The manager also has a continuous up-to-date
insight in all current offers and agreements.

Technical conditions
The needed technique for a Blue Polar application is relatively simple. You install the Blue Polar
Application-server on one of your servers (Windows 2000 and up). The business-data is stored
in a database in your network, like SQL-Server, Oracle or (for smaller applications) MS-Access.
The users use their web-browser to access the application (Netscape 7/Internet Explorer 5 or
equivalent) to run the application. Because the application is installed on one server only,
implementing updates is done within minutes.
Each server can - depending on the characteristics of the application and the hardware - handle
250 to over 1000 concurrent users. This implies that also large applications can be made using Polar Studio.
